The Elephant Pub is located on St Nicholas Street in Bristol city centre. An historic Bristol pub, which dates back to the 1700’s. The Elephant has been carefully refurbished and restored and now presents itself with lightand airy rooms with an informal weathered interior bathed in natural sunlight.
The Elephant is very much a real food and beer focused pub and the menu reflects their passion for simple, rustic and uncomplicated food. The Elephant team make every effort to obtain our ingredients from local and sustainable sources.

At the heart of the modern European food offering are glorious stone baked pizzas and oven roasts complimented by an impressive selection of guest ales and award winning fine wines.

Despite the trials and tribulations of the pub industry at the moment, The Elephant have just celebrated their first birthday on 10th June!

What is 3D TV?
3D TV is a generic term for technology that lets viewers experience TV programs, movies and games etc created with a stereoscopic effect. It adds the illusion of a third dimension, depth, to current TV and HDTV display technology, which is normally limited to only height and width (“2D”).

How can you get 3D from a 2D TV?
A 3D TV screen showing 3D content displays two separate images of the same shot simultaneously, one intended for the viewer’s right eye and one for the left eye. The two full-size images occupy the entire screen and appear intermixed with one another–objects in one image often repeated or skewed slightly to the left (or right) of corresponding objects in the other–when viewed without the aid of special 3D glasses. When viewers don the glasses, they can perceive these two images as a single 3D image.

Sports links: 3D rugby pubs in Bristol and 3D football pubs in Bristol

The system relies on a visual process called stereopsis. The eyes of an adult human lie about 2.5 inches apart, which lets each eye see objects from slightly different angles. The two images on a 3D TV screen present objects from two slightly different angles as well, and when those images combine in the viewer’s mind with the aid of the glasses, the illusion of depth is created.

Will I need 3D glasses?

New 3D TVs require Active Shutter glasses (active liquid crystal shutter glasses) which work by very quickly blocking the left and then the right eye in sequence (120 times per second systems like Panasonic’s Full-HD 3D). The glasses, in addition to the liquid-crystal lenses, contain electronics and rechargeable batteries (typically good for 75+ hours) that syncronise to the TV wirelessly via an infrared or Bluetooth signal.

Part of the Bristol Beer Factory/Tobacco Factory empire, the Grain Barge has transformed the old Shoots floating restaurant into a truly ‘local’ pub. The Grain Barge has been done-up using reclaimed and recycled materials. The bar stocks Thatchers cider plus the full range of Bristol Beer Factory draft real ales – Red, No.7, Sunrise and Exhibition – along with its bottled beers and stout, all brewed just over the water. The Beer Factory uses locally grown malt and hops, and occupies part of the old Ashton Gate Brewery – wafting the smell of malt across Southville on brewing days.

The Grain Barge aims to keep their wine and food miles to a minimum. Food includes Pieminister pies and locally sourced bangers and mash. (The Pieminister Steak and Ale pie uses Bristol Beer Factory beer.) Sausages from Wherlocks – Southville Sizzler and Brunel sausages (using the Beer Factory Red ale).

Food served
Tuesday–Friday 12noon–3pm & 6–9pm

With a comfy sofa area and a beer garden that should be open later in the summer, the pub is run for locals and newcomers alike by the ever-smiling Marianne.

The pub recently converted to a freehouse and the consistently superb beer is almost exclusively from the South West.

The menu changes regularly to reflect seasonal availability, and includes local fare such as Gloucester Old Spot sausages. It’s a short menu, with only one veggie option, but when we visited, it was an imaginative veggie selection that I’d never seen on a menu before! Just a shame that the house wines are all from about as far away as possible.
