A Bristol accountant will be swapping his calculator for drum sticks at a Jools Holland style event in Bristol to raise money for ParalympicsGB, a national charity which supports British athletes through each Paralympic Games and aims to increase participation in disability sport.

Richard Hawes, a Partner at the business advisory firm Deloitte, will be playing the drums with his band, Eclipse, at Laterz@Paintworks, on Friday 14 October, 6.30pm (the first band starts at 7pm).

In total, five live bands and two diverse acts will be on stage at this musical extravaganza, styled on the Jools Holland Later Show. Topping the bill will be Bristol’s very own Pop Britannia, a leading Brit Pop tribute act that covers Oasis, Blur and Paul Weller among other well-known groups. They will be joined by a variety of Bristol-based talent including local cover bands Evolution and Eclipse, End of the Line and Merlin’s Hill, as well as Running Numbers and songstress Sophiaa who will perform acoustic versions of original and cover material.

The musical evening is just one of several challenges, activities and events led by the Deloitte Bristol team to help reach their target of raising £25,000 for ParalympicsGB.

Richard Hawes, Restructuring Services partner at Deloitte, who has organised the event, said: “As an official sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Deloitte has set itself the challenge of raising £1 million nationally for ParalympicsGB, and the Laterz musical event is just one of the exciting ways we’ll be doing this. We’re delighted that so many talented musicians are able to join us in supporting this cause and urge music fans around the city to come along too.”

Laterz@Paintworks will be held on Friday 14 October 2011 at 6.30pm at The Paintworks, Bath Road, Bristol. Tickets are £10.00 (plus small booking fee) and available online at http://laterzpaintworks.eventbrite.com. All proceeds and donations will go to ParalympicsGB.

We’d like to highlight a local band that came to our attention recently. You can read all about them below.

Tremor have been playing the songs of Matt Wescott for most of the last decade. Wescott has won recognition for these songs in the shape of a songwriter’s award from Paramount Songs and more importantly the band have received airplay from radio stations across the South West of England including BBC Radio Bristol, where they were ‘band of the week’ and Star FM. Wescott is joined in Tremor by brilliant bassist and former school friend Simon Bidwell.

They first recruited talented, young drummer Alex Browne as a teenager 10 years ago and in that time they’ve gained huge experience both on the live circuit and in the recording studio with Tremor and several other regionally well known bands too. Venues the band have played at include The O2 (then Carling) Academy, Fiddler’s, The Fleece, The Louisiana, Thekla, The Croft & The Cooler in Bristol. The Astoria II, The Marquee, Brixton JAMM, Cairo Jacks and Camden Verge in London. Bath’s Mole’s Club, Cardiff’s Barfly and venues in Glastonbury, Taunton & Burnham.

Tremor have also performed at festival’s and outdoor events in Croyde Bay, Bristol and Clevedon. On their travels the band have performed on bills with such luminaries as Razorlight, Scouting For Girls, Newton Faulkner, Dodgy, Fionn Regan, Trio Valore, The Wurzels and even The Cheeky Girls! In addition to this touring Tremor have regularly performed at pubs, clubs and events all over their home town Weston-super-Mare.

Tremor have been described as ‘a cacophony of indie noise’ by Outlaw, ‘just brilliant’ by Absent Kelly Promotions, ‘the new Reef’ by industry magazine The Tip Sheet and most recently ‘indie pop songs about madness sung with smooth, soulful vocals and backed by powerful drums’ by livemusicscene.co.uk.

In a neat twist of symmetry the most recent addition to the Tremor line-up is virtuoso guitarist and Browne’s former school band-mate Russ Barnes. Tremor are currently working on a distribution deal before their most recent recording, EP ‘Homebrew Part 1a’ is released digitally via iTunes and many other major online music stores. Fans of Tremor’s music are now able to follow them online via twitter (@uktremor), tremor official facebook page or www.myspace.com/uktremor where all the latest gig and release dates are publicised along with photo‘s and videos of the band performing. In addition to the forthcoming release a website www.uktremor.com is now live.

Stay tuned and keep coming back to find out about forthcoming gigs on a monthly basis in Bristol, regularly elsewhere round the South West UK, imminent visits to Cardiff, to London for a slot at Alan McGee’s ‘Greasy Lips’ indie rock ‘n’ roll club night, showcases elsewhere in London and the latest on festival slots for 2011, press and radio coverage.

The Lighthouse Family were a successful British duo active from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. Vocalist Tunde Baiyewu and keyboard player Paul Tucker formed the act in 1993 in Newcastle upon Tyne after meeting at university. Their 1995 debut album Ocean Drive sold more than 1.6 million copies in the UK alone and established them as a popular easy listening duo throughout Europe.

Although none of their singles reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, they did reach number one on the Australian Singles Chart with the song ” High “.

Lighthouse Family split up in early 2003 because of what they called a “heavy promotional schedule” following the release of Whatever Gets You Through the Day in 2002. This led to both men pursuing individual projects. Baiyewu is now a solo artist, while Tucker joined a rock band, The Orange Lights.

According to their management, the band has not split up despite being inactive: “there is always the possibility of another Lighthouse Family album one day.”

This spring, sees the return of the ‘Havana Cultura Collective Tour’; a series of live DJ and music gigs which will take place in Bristol. The project, created by premium Cuban rum Havana Club, focuses on raising the profile of contemporary Cuban musical talent to an international audience. It is the first international musical project from Havana Club’s global art initiative, Havana Cultura and has been developed in collaboration with renowned producer and DJ Gilles Peterson. The sessions will culminate with a grand finale which will feature an exclusive performance by the man himself.

Following the success of last years’ Leeds and Manchester gigs, the ‘Havana Cultura Collective’ will now provide a unique Cuban spin to nights out in Bristol, as consumers are invited to discover the real spirit of Havana. Guests will enjoy authentic Cuban cocktails such as Mojitos and Daiquiris to Havana influenced backdrops. The DJ line will consist of resident DJ Lubi; the UK’s top Latin music DJ, whose stints include shows on Jazz FM, BBC Radio 1Xtra and Gillles Peterson’s Worldwide. He will be joined by DJ Irfan Hussain. Hussain runs independent label, Rain City Music label and his repertoire focuses on soulful/deep house, Latin, funk, Cuban and electronic. Dom Servini will be finalising the core line up. Servini, runs a record label and has a weekly residency with Peterson. His past projects include playing at the legendary Bluenote and London’s Jazz Cafe.

In addition to the music, there will be exclusive in bar performances from ‘Sonido Callajero’ UK’s hottest urban Latin MC crew. The group consists of two MCs and a percussionist who play a fusion of hip hop and Latino. Front man Magico is one of the UK’s best known Latino MCs and has worked with many big names ranging from Basement Jaxx to Courtney Pine. They will be joined by Papa Record & Rolex, a renowned Cuban MC duo. Papa Record won Best Hip Hop Album at the Cuba Disco Awards in 2007.

The series of gigs will culminate in a live gig by Havana Cultura artist Kumar, hosted by the legendary Gilles Peterson.  Original Cuban export Kumar is one of the most talked about and emerging Cuban hip hop acts of recent years. Peterson will play an original, eclectic set inspired by his time in Cuba and will perform alongside Kumar and the exclusive Havana Cultura Band. The band has been especially created for the project by Gilles Peterson.

To underpin the collaboration, Gilles Peterson has also produced for the first time ever, an album of modern Cuban music. Peterson spent the summer in Cuba, unearthing the very best in up and coming musical talent. These new artists now feature on ‘Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura’, a double CD featuring 28 tracks of Cuba’s freshest talent from Latin, afro jazz and fusion to hip hop, funk, reggaeton and pop. The album was recorded in Havana’s world famous Egrem studios, which has hosted major figures of the Cuban music scene – including the Buena Vista Social Club.

The collaboration with Gilles Peterson and Havana Cultura represents the biggest collection of contemporary Cuban musicians in a single musical initiative since Cuba’s most famous musical export to date, Buena Vista Social Club.

Commenting on the project, Gilles Peterson says: “The Buena Vista Social Club helped put Cuba on the world music scene but it’s been over a decade since that initiative and just like the dancers, music in Cuba never stands still. The energy of the music and breadth of talent in Havana is like nowhere else in the world. Every corner of the city, every nook and cranny has a sound. We wanted an album that showcases the very best of the new generation of musical talent to be found in Havana today. Music is the soul of Havana and this is the freshest sounding soul music coming out of it.”
