Gary Hopkins, the councillor in charge of transport, said he wanted to “encourage” people to use the bus.

“What we don’t want is people who are driving in, parking all day and clogging up the city,” he said.

But Bob Bull, from the Association of British Drivers, said he thought Mr Hopkins was on “another planet”.

“The dearest car park I think I’ve ever come across in an ordinary city is the one off Rupert Street,” he said.

“I think the times I’ve taken my mother to the eye hospital and there’s nowhere to park outside and then it’s £6.30 for two hours.

“If you think that’s wonderful off-street parking then I think you’re on another planet really.”

Limited space

According to Which?, Bristol was named 10th behind cities such as London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Leeds.

Cheaper cities included Cardiff, Coventry, Birmingham and Southampton.

Mr Hopkins said Bristol had problems with limited parking space because of the layout of the city.

• Start Low, Aim High: eBay Motors has millions of listings online, so you must try to make your vehicle stand out from the crowd. Generally, the best way to attract high bids is to start your listing as low as possible, say one pound. • Show us your docs: Any service history is a bonus but the most important document to have is the V5 logbook. Without this, you cannot sell your vehicle legally and no purchase will pay for a vehicle that does not have a logbook.

The 1.6-litre petrol in Edge trim will cost £15,995 while the 1.6-litre diesel will be £1,000 more. Titanium prices will start at £18,745 for the 1.6-litre petrol, while range-topping Titanium X range kicks off with the £21,245 1.6-litre petrol. The most expensive new Focus will be the 2-litre TDCi Titanium X, at £25,095.

The engine line-up will include 104bhp, 123bhp and 148bhp 1.6-litre petrol units, along with 1.6- and 2-litre diesels providing 94-161bhp. The bigger diesel is also available with Ford’s dual-clutch gearbox, while smaller diesels are fitted with a stop and start system as standard.

Only the five-door hatchback will be offered from launch, with an estate to follow later in the year – Ford has already said there will be no three-door hatch.

The first ever Police-spec XFs are due to go on patrol across the Midlands soon. The Central Motorway Police Group has bought seven high performance Police vehicles based on the award-winning Jaguar XF Diesel S model.

The Police-specification Jaguars feature the 275PS 3.0-litre Diesel S engine and a ‘Police Pack’ which includes a roof mounted light bar with 3600 blue flashing lights and integrated side alley lights, blue and white flashing LED lights inside the front grille, side mounted blue flashing LED lights, blue and red flashing LED lights integrated in the rear light clusters and a Home Office-specification electronics system that powers a full suite of electronic equipment.
