The Ashton Court parkrun, Bristol is a weekly free 5km (3.1 mile) timed run held at Ashton Court in Bristol on a Saturday morning.

With around 170+ runners heading-off at 9.00am each Saturday, the group is certainly popular and numbers are growing week by week.

Taking part is easy! You simply visit the website and fill-in your details on the registration page. Upon completion

of your registration, you receive your own personal barcode, which you print and bring along with you to each run you take part in. This barcode is used as part of a simple, yet effective time recording system so you can constantly track your results. it with you each time you run.

The great news is that you can turn up to any parkrun with your barcode and participate, with results logged and tracked. There is also a facility whereby you receive an e-mail and/or text message with your results.

Tremendously fulfilling regardless of your aims, parkrun really presents a unique opportunity to participate in a free, organised event with a real cross-section of runners . Some runners log consistent 17 minute runs, but there is also a healthy proportion of those who combine a walk and jog to complete the course around the 5o minute mark .

Given it is a free event, prizes and freebies aren’t available, but what you will feel is a great sense of satisfaction in your achievements.

What is April Fools’ Day?

April Fools’ Day is celebrated in different countries in the Northern Hemisphere on April 1 every year. Sometimes referred to as All Fools’ Day, April 1 is not a national holiday, but is widely recognized and celebrated as a day when many people play all kinds of jokes and foolishness. The day is marked by the commission of good-humoured or otherwise funny jokes, hoaxes, and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, teachers, neighbors, work associates, etc.

Over 500 years ago John Cabot and his crew set sail for Asia aboard the original Matthew hoping to trade goods and commodities with the people who lived there.

However, he finally arrived on the coast of Newfoundland and therefore was the original discoverer of North America, not Christopher Columbus as most people believe.

Today the replica of the Matthew sits proudly in Bristol harbour for all to see. The general public are able to board the Matthew as well as embark on trips around the harbour.

In 1997 the replica Matthew followed the same course as John Cabot in 1497 and sailed across to Newfoundland. It carried the same number of crew members as the original and took the same and used the same amount of time to complete the crossing.

Often, if you are feeling lonely and lacking in friends, all you need to do is get out and meet people who will potentially be your friends. There are a wide range of opportunities to meet people in Bristol, whatever type you are interested in. That is good, because your best chance to make friends is with people who like the same kinds of things as you do.

In this article you will find some easy suggestions for how to meet people in Bristol or saying that any other city that has a bustling social life. Approaching strangers is always difficult, so the suggestions for how to meet people start with the easiest methods first. Once you meet people, it is then up to you to capitalize on this and build a friendship through further meetings and other activities, but here we give you some good ideas for those initial ice-breakers.

Remember that Bristol is a large place. If you don’t meet people you feel are potential friends right away, don’t be disheartened. Some tips here may not work for you, but there are plenty of others to try in a place like Bristol, with diverse social opportunities. Not everyone will like you, but then you won’t like everyone you meet, either. That just shows you are discerning and have standards. If one way doesn’t work for you, move on to the next.

1. Meet people through your existing friends

This way to meet people is so obvious that it is often overlooked, but thinks about it; your friends know what you’re like, so if they think you will like another person it is quite likely that you will. The ice will already be broken because you will have your friend to introduce you and get the conversation going. You may set out to meet people who know your friends quite actively by throwing a party and inviting your friends to bring a guest. Also, having your friends around you will give you added confidence to approach the people you don’t know at the party.

2. Meet people through work

If you are in a job where you don’t really meet people, you may want to consider changing jobs to something more sociable. Talking with the people with whom you work gives you a head start on friendships because you will at least have worked in common to talk about. You may also do voluntary work, allowing you to meet people who have come together for a common purpose.

3. Meet people for sport

Playing sports are a great way to meet people. That is especially true if you are playing a team sport where you get a chance to develop camaraderie. Socializing after games will also probably be a natural part of being in the club. Bristol has many sports clubs and teams that you could join. They also need not be expensive and many clubs will welcome beginners.

4. Meet people for a hobby or interest

If sport isn’t your thing, perhaps politics or some other cause is. Bristol has numerous clubs dedicated to political parties, social causes or other socializing opportunities and hobbies. Join some clubs that interest you and you will have lots of opportunities to meet people who like the same things that you do. You may also take classes in something that interests you and that will live you lots to talk about when you meet people. Bristol offers lots of opportunities to go to evening or weekend classes.

These are just five simple ways to meet people in Bristol but they may kick start friendships that will last a lifetime because they focus on your common interests and bonds.

Positivity Bristol is a new scheme set up this winter, the idea behind the scheme is to celebrate all the great things that happen in Bristol.

After some thinking of what I could do this winter to “Give something back” I decided that the simple ideas are often the best.

So on the 24th December 2011 we plan to converge upon the Bear Pit
in central Bristol at 10am with clothing donated by the good people of Bristol and give it away completely free, also featuring the “Positivity Bristol” wall and hopefully many other things. J

I am sure that we all have that coat that we no longer wear, a pair of gloves that have been replaced by a better pair for the winter, usually we would throw them away or quite often they just get chucked to the back of a wardrobe and never thought about again.

If you do, now is the perfect chance to get rid of said items and at the same time hand them on to someone else that can use them and enjoy them.

All items of clothing are welcome, condition is not to much of a problem (Of course not full of holes!) And beyond the standard t-shirts, trousers stuff like Hats, Gloves and Scarves would be very welcome as well because we have a long winter ahead of us. Some special items such as Sleeping bags etc will be held back from the main drop off and given directly too people that need them, hopefully we can do this through the “Caring at Christmas” project but I am yet to confirm this.

All you need to do is Bag the items of clothing up in a black bag, give me a call, text or email (Details at the bottom of the page) and I will arrange for them to be picked up. Simple hey?

View the poster in PDF format by clicking here.

If you have any ideas or offers of help I would be interested to hear them too. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you,

Founded in Bristol in 1998, Byzantium Restaurant takes its name from the ancient capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, which flourished for a thousand years. The bottom two floors of a nineteenth century brick warehouse were converted from a bare space into an opulent empire of the senses in the six months leading up to our opening in April 1998. As you enter the antique double doors you are greeted by vibrant, warm colours with relaxed cushioned seating around the marble dance floor, itself at the centre of the pillared atrium. At the far end of the room is a grand marble staircase that winds around a pillar to the magnificent first floor dining room with views across to St. Mary Redcliffe church. On the other side of the room is the glass fronted kitchen allowing views of our master chefs at work and to the side is a hallway leading to the private dining room, perfect for intimate parties of up to 24 people.

We are pleased to offer a discount voucher for Autumn 2011 for weloveBristol.com viewers: Click here

The design has incorporated elements from Italianate pillars framing the atrium, Antique Doors from the Afghani/Pakistani hinterland, a temple pillar from Nuristan next to the Indus valley, a variety of colourful North African lanterns and a series of Byzantine faces staring down from the atrium with its circular candelabra. The bar is built around a spice traders travelling emporium that started its life on the back of a camel but now provides sanctuary for cocktails, wines, beers and spirits of all styles and types. Even the toilets continue the eclectic design theme with modern beaten copper sinks complementing the brass samovars that have been converted to incorporate plumbed in taps.

Byzantium offers a comprehensive a la carte menu using fresh, local produce. The food style is wholesome and uncomplicated with generous portions and Mediterranean flavours.

The Byzantium wine list is extensive and made up of quality wines from both the Old and New World supplied by the region’s top vintners.

Byzantium offers a compact but neat classic cocktail list and in addition to many mainstream products, the bar is also stocked with some more unusual and interesting aperitifs, spirits, and liqueurs.

Over the 12 years they have had a number of quality chefs, who have progressed to their own premises but left a heritage of special dishes, which has been built upon and developed by head chef Robert Curtis, taking their cooking to new levels of excellence.

Thinking of visiting a Fireworks Display in Bristol 2011 this bonfire night? We have listed any known Bristol fireworks displays. If your event isn’t listed, contact us using the link above and spread the word about your firework event in Bristol.

Bristol Fireworks Fiesta and Display Canford Park, Westbury on Trym – 5th November

“Members of Round Table (and lately Clifton Rotary Club) had organised a large display in Bristol for over 40 years, and when it moved to the Downs in the early 1980s, it had become one of the biggest in the South-West. Sadly, after raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, it was forced to end due to a combination of bad weather, rising costs and increasing numbers of people standing outside and watching for free. However, after a brief lull, the members of Bristol Round Table and clifton Rotary Club decided that it was too big an event (and too big a fund raiser) to let go, and plans were made to resurrect the event in Canford Park. An enormous amount of planning and preparation has been undertaken over the last year in order to put on this display, which will rival the old Downs display in its size and power. Again, money raised will go to local good causes – we have already agreed to support St Peter’s hospice through ticket sales, and local school PTAs, and a proportion of the proceeds will go to the Lord Mayor’s Children’s Appeal.

We will not be having any fairground rides, and we also won’t be building our usual huge bonfire as the grass at Canford Park is more scarce (and more luscious) than the Downs, and it would be a shame to spoil it. However, there will be hot and cold food stalls and we will
have Bristol’s famous ambling Band helping to keep the crowds entertained before our specialist pyrotechnic company, Skyburst fireworks, ‘light the blue touch paper’ at 7pm.

We chose Canford as a replacement site as it has plenty of natural screening, a huge fallout area next door, and nowhere for crowds to stand and watch for free. More importantly, it has great pedestrian links to the surrounding communities and we are encouraging families to walk to the event as no parking is provided.”

Gates Open: 6.15pm
Display Begins: 7.00pm

Entrance on Canford Lane, Westbury-on-Trym, BS9

The website for the event is: www.fireworksfiesta.co.uk

We all want to have fun on bonfire night, but we should all be aware of the dangers fireworks pose. The best way to stay safe this bonfire night is to go to an organised firework display. If you decide to host your own show your garden, make sure you stay safe by following the Firework Code.

Firework safety checklist

Figures have shown that more children than adults get hurt by fireworks. If you are thinking of using fireworks as part of your celebrations, you should follow the steps listed below.

View the latest list of Fireworks Displays in Bristol 2011.

Before your firework display

Preparation is key to enjoying fireworks safely, so:

don’t buy fireworks from anywhere you’re not sure about, like a van or a temporary, unlicensed market stall

only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 or with a CE mark – this shows that the firework meets British or European safety standards (a reputable shop will know this)

follow the instructions on each firework – read them in daylight or by torchlight, never by a naked flame

make suitable supports and launchers if you’re setting off Catherine wheels or rockets

Things you will need on the night

It’s easy to get a few household things together, these are:

a closed metal box to store the fireworks – take them out one at a time

a bucket of water – to cool sparklers and put out any small fires

eye protection and gloves

a bucket of earth to stick fireworks in

Lighting fireworks

Follow these simple guidelines to stay safe:

only one person should be responsible for letting off fireworks

don’t drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks

light fireworks at arm’s length, using a taper

make sure everyone stands well back

never go back to a firework that has been lit – even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode

Sparklers

Sparklers are fun, but always:

supervise children with sparklers and never give them to a child under five

light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves

put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water

Other tips on the night

Finally, follow these other rules for a safe night:

keep pets indoors – most animals get very scared by the lights and noise from fireworks

never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them

never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire

take care around bonfires – all clothes, even those labelled ‘low flammability’ – can catch fire

Take Care, stay safe, and have a great Bonfire Night!

Our number one men’s gift recommendation from Comet’s offerings by far is the black 32GB iPad2.

With built-in Wi-Fi, the iPad2 ideal if you have a wireless high-speed Internet router in your home, or when you are out and about using your iPad2 near a wireless hotspot — such as in a coffee shop or school library. The iPad2 is thinner and lighter, so it feels even more comfortable in your hands. And it makes surfing the web, checking email, watching films, making FaceTime video calls and reading books so easy.

Two powerful cores in one A5 chip mean iPad2 can do twice the work at once. Multitasking is smoother, apps load faster and everything just works better. With up to nine times the graphics performance, gameplay on iPad2 is even smoother and more realistic. And faster graphics help apps perform better — especially those with video. You’ll see it when you’re scrolling through your photo library, editing video with iMovie and viewing animations in Keynote. There are two cameras – one on the front and one on the back. They may be tiny, but they’re a big deal. They’re designed for FaceTime video calling, and they work together so you can talk to your favourite people and see them smile and laugh back at you. The front camera puts you and your friend face-to-face. Switch to the back camera during your video call to share where you are, who you’re with or what’s going on around you. If it’s worth filming, let the back camera roll. It’s HD, so every movie you shoot is a mini-masterpiece. And you can take wacky snapshots in Photo Booth.

It’s the most fun a face can have. iPad2 is one big, beautiful display — 9.7 inches of high-resolution photos, films, web pages, books and more. LED backlighting makes everything you see remarkably crisp, vivid and bright even in low light places. The iPad2 is designed to show off everything in portrait and landscape, so with every turn (even upside down), the display adjusts to fit. Because it uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching), it has a wide, 178° viewing angle. Hold it up to someone across the room, or share it with someone sitting next to you, and everyone gets a brilliant view. You use your fingers to do everything, from surfing the web, typing email, reading books and swiping through photos — it is easier and a lot more fun.

More gift ideas will follow, so continue to check back for the latest Christmas offerings, from all your favourite retailers.

X Factor 2011 is a bit rubbish? There is something particularly lackluster about this year’s X Factor and we investigate what has gone for the talent show. Can the show honestly be credible, after discovering Leona Lewis – nobody has came close to matching, or even, rivaling her talent, which tends to hit at the credibility of the shows title ‘The X Factor’.

So, what exactly is the X Factor. It’s not about talent, more about a good attempt at weekend entertainment and sometimes that means putting through the stranger acts , just so we can laugh at their expense.

A good metric for the performance is the X Factor vs Strictly Come Dancing  Saturday night ratings battles.
Strictly’s Broadway special scored points against its ITV rival on Saturday as it finished on a high with 9.6 million, while X Factor had 8.8 million at the same point, half an hour into the show.

Even with a peak of 11.9 million viewers for its love and heartbreak themed show, it was a 2 million drop on ratings for the same stage last year.

Jonathan Ross has also hit out at ITV show, less than a week after moving to the channel for a new series of his chat show. Speaking to The People at the weekend, Jonathan Ross blasted the show and its boss Simon Cowell for the way contestants are treated on the show.

Ross said: “What good is he doing for music? None. These kids come on, are given what seems like a huge chance.”

He moaned: “They have to deal with this huge expectation and almost without exception a year later they are forgotten. That’s not good for their lives or music.”

Does the X Factor need Simon and Cheryl? In our opinion, yes. What do you think? Leave us a comment below!

A Bristol accountant will be swapping his calculator for drum sticks at a Jools Holland style event in Bristol to raise money for ParalympicsGB, a national charity which supports British athletes through each Paralympic Games and aims to increase participation in disability sport.

Richard Hawes, a Partner at the business advisory firm Deloitte, will be playing the drums with his band, Eclipse, at Laterz@Paintworks, on Friday 14 October, 6.30pm (the first band starts at 7pm).

In total, five live bands and two diverse acts will be on stage at this musical extravaganza, styled on the Jools Holland Later Show. Topping the bill will be Bristol’s very own Pop Britannia, a leading Brit Pop tribute act that covers Oasis, Blur and Paul Weller among other well-known groups. They will be joined by a variety of Bristol-based talent including local cover bands Evolution and Eclipse, End of the Line and Merlin’s Hill, as well as Running Numbers and songstress Sophiaa who will perform acoustic versions of original and cover material.

The musical evening is just one of several challenges, activities and events led by the Deloitte Bristol team to help reach their target of raising £25,000 for ParalympicsGB.

Richard Hawes, Restructuring Services partner at Deloitte, who has organised the event, said: “As an official sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Deloitte has set itself the challenge of raising £1 million nationally for ParalympicsGB, and the Laterz musical event is just one of the exciting ways we’ll be doing this. We’re delighted that so many talented musicians are able to join us in supporting this cause and urge music fans around the city to come along too.”

Laterz@Paintworks will be held on Friday 14 October 2011 at 6.30pm at The Paintworks, Bath Road, Bristol. Tickets are £10.00 (plus small booking fee) and available online at http://laterzpaintworks.eventbrite.com. All proceeds and donations will go to ParalympicsGB.

Toddlebike teams up with Bristol and IW Cycling Festivals this Autumn
to attract the cyclists of tomorrow.

Organisers of the Isle of Wight and Bristol Cycling Festivals, taking place this September, have teamed up with Toddlebike to get children as young as 1 on the road towards independent riding.

The benefits of cycling are difficult to underestimate from health to social, financial and environmental but traditionally there has been little on offer to Toddlers or their families who might not have considered cycling, but through attending events like may be encouraged to take the first steps towards becoming the cyclists of tomorrow.

Claire Critchison, Isle of Wight Council events officer, said: “The Toddlebike Trial is a great addition to this year’s cycling
festival which aims to cater for all ages and abilities. This is a great opportunity for the cyclists of the future to get active and have fun.’

With a recent study finding that almost a quarter of the population is now cycling, it is clear the kind of impact events such as these can have on encouraging people to get on board. Antony de Heveningham, organiser of the Bristol Cycling Festival, explains his objective to make the Bristol event as accessible as possible:

‘At the Bristol Cycling Festival we are hoping to cater not only for already-keen cyclists, but also to showcase the sport to those who may be considering it for the first time. We’re looking to put on an event that feels more like a village fete than a World Cup. Providing new features for families to enjoy such as our Toddlebike Trials is one of the ways we hope to achieve this.’

With the Chief Medical Officer recently taking the unprecedented step of advising parents of the need for regular exercise for the under 5s, and importance of limiting buggy time to a minimum, parents are looking for new ways to foster an active lifestyle for their children from the earliest possible age, and cycling is a key way that this can
be achieved as Toddlebike Founder Jo Hockley explains: ‘It can be difficult for parents to find ways to ensure that their
children get the level of exercise that they need during their early years and habits made at this important stage can be difficult to overcome. Our work with Cycling Festivals is as much about showing parents that there are practical alternatives to buggy or car transportation for almost every journey as it is getting Toddlers to take the first step towards learning to cycle.’

IW Cycling Festival takes place from 17-24 September with the Carbon Cycle Celebration and Toddlebike event taking place in St James Square in Newport on Saturday 24 September between 11am and 3pm. This is the first showing of this installation in Bristol and will be open between noon and 11pm daily until Sunday 11th September.

“I have been encircled by raw nature my whole life. It was not until I studied at Coventry University (05-09) that I realised how important it was to my personal motivation and positivity to surround myself with elements of natural life..” says Jo about herself.

“My work is derived and inspired by the intricate structure that forms nature. I use the visual essence and arbitrary patterns that occur in all of nature through the mediums of pen and ink, painting, sculpture and wire work.”
