The Ashton Court parkrun, Bristol is a weekly free 5km (3.1 mile) timed run held at Ashton Court in Bristol on a Saturday morning.

With around 170+ runners heading-off at 9.00am each Saturday, the group is certainly popular and numbers are growing week by week.

Taking part is easy! You simply visit the website and fill-in your details on the registration page. Upon completion

of your registration, you receive your own personal barcode, which you print and bring along with you to each run you take part in. This barcode is used as part of a simple, yet effective time recording system so you can constantly track your results. it with you each time you run.

The great news is that you can turn up to any parkrun with your barcode and participate, with results logged and tracked. There is also a facility whereby you receive an e-mail and/or text message with your results.

Tremendously fulfilling regardless of your aims, parkrun really presents a unique opportunity to participate in a free, organised event with a real cross-section of runners . Some runners log consistent 17 minute runs, but there is also a healthy proportion of those who combine a walk and jog to complete the course around the 5o minute mark .

Given it is a free event, prizes and freebies aren’t available, but what you will feel is a great sense of satisfaction in your achievements.

Thinking of visiting a Fireworks Display in Bristol 2011 this bonfire night? We have listed any known Bristol fireworks displays. If your event isn’t listed, contact us using the link above and spread the word about your firework event in Bristol.

Bristol Fireworks Fiesta and Display Canford Park, Westbury on Trym – 5th November

“Members of Round Table (and lately Clifton Rotary Club) had organised a large display in Bristol for over 40 years, and when it moved to the Downs in the early 1980s, it had become one of the biggest in the South-West. Sadly, after raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, it was forced to end due to a combination of bad weather, rising costs and increasing numbers of people standing outside and watching for free. However, after a brief lull, the members of Bristol Round Table and clifton Rotary Club decided that it was too big an event (and too big a fund raiser) to let go, and plans were made to resurrect the event in Canford Park. An enormous amount of planning and preparation has been undertaken over the last year in order to put on this display, which will rival the old Downs display in its size and power. Again, money raised will go to local good causes – we have already agreed to support St Peter’s hospice through ticket sales, and local school PTAs, and a proportion of the proceeds will go to the Lord Mayor’s Children’s Appeal.

We will not be having any fairground rides, and we also won’t be building our usual huge bonfire as the grass at Canford Park is more scarce (and more luscious) than the Downs, and it would be a shame to spoil it. However, there will be hot and cold food stalls and we will
have Bristol’s famous ambling Band helping to keep the crowds entertained before our specialist pyrotechnic company, Skyburst fireworks, ‘light the blue touch paper’ at 7pm.

We chose Canford as a replacement site as it has plenty of natural screening, a huge fallout area next door, and nowhere for crowds to stand and watch for free. More importantly, it has great pedestrian links to the surrounding communities and we are encouraging families to walk to the event as no parking is provided.”

Gates Open: 6.15pm
Display Begins: 7.00pm

Entrance on Canford Lane, Westbury-on-Trym, BS9

We all want to have fun on bonfire night, but we should all be aware of the dangers fireworks pose. The best way to stay safe this bonfire night is to go to an organised firework display. If you decide to host your own show your garden, make sure you stay safe by following the Firework Code.

Firework safety checklist

Figures have shown that more children than adults get hurt by fireworks. If you are thinking of using fireworks as part of your celebrations, you should follow the steps listed below.

View the latest list of Fireworks Displays in Bristol 2011.

Before your firework display

Preparation is key to enjoying fireworks safely, so:

don’t buy fireworks from anywhere you’re not sure about, like a van or a temporary, unlicensed market stall

only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 or with a CE mark – this shows that the firework meets British or European safety standards (a reputable shop will know this)

follow the instructions on each firework – read them in daylight or by torchlight, never by a naked flame

make suitable supports and launchers if you’re setting off Catherine wheels or rockets

Things you will need on the night

It’s easy to get a few household things together, these are:

a closed metal box to store the fireworks – take them out one at a time

a bucket of water – to cool sparklers and put out any small fires

eye protection and gloves

a bucket of earth to stick fireworks in

Lighting fireworks

Follow these simple guidelines to stay safe:

only one person should be responsible for letting off fireworks

don’t drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks

light fireworks at arm’s length, using a taper

make sure everyone stands well back

never go back to a firework that has been lit – even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode

Sparklers

Sparklers are fun, but always:

supervise children with sparklers and never give them to a child under five

light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves

put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water

Other tips on the night

Finally, follow these other rules for a safe night:

keep pets indoors – most animals get very scared by the lights and noise from fireworks

never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them

never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire

take care around bonfires – all clothes, even those labelled ‘low flammability’ – can catch fire

Take Care, stay safe, and have a great Bonfire Night!

Toddlebike teams up with Bristol and IW Cycling Festivals this Autumn
to attract the cyclists of tomorrow.

Organisers of the Isle of Wight and Bristol Cycling Festivals, taking place this September, have teamed up with Toddlebike to get children as young as 1 on the road towards independent riding.

The benefits of cycling are difficult to underestimate from health to social, financial and environmental but traditionally there has been little on offer to Toddlers or their families who might not have considered cycling, but through attending events like may be encouraged to take the first steps towards becoming the cyclists of tomorrow.

Claire Critchison, Isle of Wight Council events officer, said: “The Toddlebike Trial is a great addition to this year’s cycling
festival which aims to cater for all ages and abilities. This is a great opportunity for the cyclists of the future to get active and have fun.’

With a recent study finding that almost a quarter of the population is now cycling, it is clear the kind of impact events such as these can have on encouraging people to get on board. Antony de Heveningham, organiser of the Bristol Cycling Festival, explains his objective to make the Bristol event as accessible as possible:

‘At the Bristol Cycling Festival we are hoping to cater not only for already-keen cyclists, but also to showcase the sport to those who may be considering it for the first time. We’re looking to put on an event that feels more like a village fete than a World Cup. Providing new features for families to enjoy such as our Toddlebike Trials is one of the ways we hope to achieve this.’

With the Chief Medical Officer recently taking the unprecedented step of advising parents of the need for regular exercise for the under 5s, and importance of limiting buggy time to a minimum, parents are looking for new ways to foster an active lifestyle for their children from the earliest possible age, and cycling is a key way that this can
be achieved as Toddlebike Founder Jo Hockley explains: ‘It can be difficult for parents to find ways to ensure that their
children get the level of exercise that they need during their early years and habits made at this important stage can be difficult to overcome. Our work with Cycling Festivals is as much about showing parents that there are practical alternatives to buggy or car transportation for almost every journey as it is getting Toddlers to take the first step towards learning to cycle.’

IW Cycling Festival takes place from 17-24 September with the Carbon Cycle Celebration and Toddlebike event taking place in St James Square in Newport on Saturday 24 September between 11am and 3pm.

The Bristol Festival, also affectionately known as ‘BrisFest’ is back for 2011! The festival is planned for 23rd – 25th September 2011, and we’re told that you can “expect bigger, bolder and better than ever before!”

The BrisFest Story

“The Bristol Festival Community Group was brought to life in October 2007 by a group of passionate local volunteers interested in ensuring the survival of a community festival for the city, after the sad demise of Ashton Court Festival which had been running for over thirty years. We all felt it vital that the city retained a not for profit event, offering high profile exposure to local talent as well as an accessible, affordable festival for all that would be an asset to the city. So the word was put out through previous volunteers and bucket shakers, to music forums and the internet, for individuals interested in putting in the hard work to revive a festival to come forward and meet.

It was agreed that public participation was key to our aims, with involvement open to all including in the planning process. Â Multiple public consultations were held which were open to everyone and advertised with great support from local media. Idea-workshop events through up the name, logo and the plan to go back to the roots, starting small and reaching high, starting with a new location, the city centre, and September date. We committed to actively encourage public opinion throughout, inviting feedback and executing suggestions at the festival in order to remain truly publically led.

We also felt it essential that the festival benefits local communities, both through performance and volunteering opportunities; aiming to bring together different cultural communities through the shared enjoyment of art, music, dance, and food. It became clear that offering music and events industry work experience and training throughout the year would be a key activity. This would benefit volunteers involved, providing that illusive entry level experience, contacts and professional qualifications needed for careers in this field.

So… a committee of ten dedicated and somewhat crazy volunteers begun the daunting task of raising £100,000, setting up a charity and planning a large scale outdoor festival for up to 8,000 visitors a day…. And the rest is history.”

This year, the Bristol Harbour Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary  between  Friday 29th and  Sunday 31st July– and once again the city will come alive with inspiring events for everyone to enjoy.

Nautical themes
Hundreds of boats and ships will be sailing into the harbour from far and wide – and to celebrate the festival’s 40th anniversary, ‘Water Week’ will see an extra week of water activity in the lead up to the festival. There will be sea shanties, a schools ‘build a boat in a week’ project, numerous trips on boats and wildlife tours.

Acrobats and family fun
Castle Park will be the centre for a host of family-friendly activities.
Cirque Bijou will dazzle crowds with aerial performers, jugglers, acrobats and hoop artists. The children’s area will offer fun packed entertainment including storytelling, handson creativity, face painting, rides and interactive performances.

Harbour festival live music
The Queen Square stage, programmed by Colston Hall, will once again feature the best local bands and invited national and international artists.
The fabulous waterfront settings of the Cascade Steps stage and the Amphitheatre stage will serve up an eclectic mix of acoustic, folk and world sounds.
The Remix Stage – for Bristol’s up and coming young musicians – will be based at Colston Hall for the first time.

Harbour festival Dance
With three stages showcasing the very best of the regional dance scene, together with national headliners, the Dance Village returns for a fourth year, supported again by NHS Bristol. Expect to see everything from ballet to African, salsa to Bollywood and hip hop to tango.
If you’re inspired to join in, the participation stage offers the chance to try out dance styles with professional tutors. Learn to shake and swing your way to fitness, festival style.
Food and craft markets
Continental treats from France and Italy will be the order of the day in the Queen Square market, and a wealth of the best local food stalls from the region will be found all around the festival. A craft market and an art market will tempt shoppers, while the newly created Good Living Zone in the Amphitheatre will be home to excellent local food, and
inspiring ‘green’ workshops and activities inpartnership with Bristol Green Capital.

Something different
In a major new venture, on Saturday evening festival goers will be able to enjoy a variety of ticketed shows at venues around the harbourside. These will replace the fireworks show, which will not be taking place this year.
Plus there’ll be evening ticketed performances of Treasure Island thanks to the Old Vic as it returns once again.
Their wonderful Young Company will also bring free performances during the day to King Street.

Introduction

The story of St. Pauls Afrikan Caribbean Carnival is one of a community’s success; from its small beginnings in the late sixties to the present day. The whole event now takes over the neighbourhood of St. Pauls in Bristol and involves schools, community groups and host professional performers. Until recently St Pauls has had a large Afrikan Caribbean population demonstrated by the strong community spirit shown in this annual carnival.

The involvement of a new Board and engagement of an Artistic Director after reorganisation in 2006 has improved the artistic quality, management and relations with the media, funders and sponsors. That has been instrumental in the increase in attendance to this event from the 40,000 audiences it attracted in the past to 60,000 in 2007 and over 65,000 in 2008 despite the bad weather and reaching 80,000 in 2010.

St Pauls Carnival Today

The Carnival has run continuously since 1967, with a break in 2006 when the Board was restructured. It has grown to become nationally recognised and now attracts over 80,000 people each year. The carnival involves over a thousand participants including sound systems, children from the local primary schools, artists, local sports events, circus, visiting groups, parents and officials, which makes it a vibrant carnival event.

Run by a not-for-profit organisation, which oversees the planning, and delivery of this loved carnival it is a glittering pageant of costumes, cultures and floats, each reflecting powerful cultural traditions from around the world. Alongside the famous street parade there are a host of sound systems playing different styles of music, live stages featuring local and international artists, spoken word corner co-ordinated by local poets, stalls offering a taste of foods from different continents, a creative environment for families located in St. Agnes Park and pre carnival events including Mas camps where local people can gather to create their own costumes.

bBristol Museum and Art Gallery is among five regional museums in the UK to host a tour of ten of Leonardo da Vinci’s finest drawings from the Royal Collection. The exhibition will open in Bristol on 30 March 2012 and forms part of the celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen in 2012.

These drawings have been selected from the unparalleled holdings of the Royal Library to reflect the whole range of Leonardo’s activities. Though he trained as a painter, Leonardo soon expanded his activities into the fields of sculpture and architecture, engineering, botany, geology, mapmaking, hydraulics, optics and anatomy. His principal tool of investigation was drawing, and through the hundreds of his sheets that survive we can piece together the life and work of the archetypal Renaissance Man.

Leonardo’s drawings were executed in a range of different media – pen and ink, red and black chalks, and metalpoint, in which a silver stylus is drawn across coated paper to produce studies of great finesse.

Included in the exhibition will be a sheet of designs of chariots geared to flailing clubs, possibly intended for a treatise on warfare, and a sketch of an enormous equestrian monument to Francesco Sforza, the father of his patron Ludovico Sforza, ruler of Milan.

More peaceful are a study of the head of Leda, the mythical princess seduced by Jupiter, and – intended for the same painting of Leda – a detailed botanical study of oak leaves. Leonardo’s pioneering scientific work is exemplified by a double-sided sheet of anatomical studies, based on human dissection carried out by the artist in the medical school of the University of Pavia.

Two very different landscapes record a scheme to drain marshland to the south of Rome, and a minutely detailed view of a river taken from the window of the Villa Melzi at Vaprio d’Adda, where Leonardo was staying in 1513.

In his sixties Leonardo moved to France, and a costume study of a man on horseback is evidence of his work as a festival designer for King Francis I. More personal is a sheet of studies of apocalyptic scenes, showing Leonardo’s fascination with destruction towards the end of his life; and the final drawing in the show is one of the last sheets executed by the artist, a rough study of an old, decrepit man in profile, surely capturing something of Leonardo’s own feelings about his bodily decay.

This will be a unique opportunity to see some of the most fascinating and accomplished drawings ever produced, and to engage at first hand with the one of the greatest minds of all time.

Julie Finch, director of Bristol museums, galleries and archives, says: “We are delighted to exhibit this national collection in Bristol. Working with esteemed collections, such as those held by the Royal Collection, is both a privilege and a pleasure. The Bristol audience will appreciate the quality of work on show and the exhibition will be extremely popular drawing in visitors from across the southwest and beyond. Bristol has gained a reputation for showing national collections and gained recognition for this. The Leonardo da Vinci exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase a major range of works during the Queen’s Jubilee.”

As part of a series of talks to raise over £100,000 for the Help for Heroes charity which supports wounded servicemen and women, @Bristol will be hosting a fascinating lecture about the Zulu War on 30 June 2011. The ‘Zulu War Talks’ will provide the opportunity to discover the remarkable tales of courage, honour and mutual respect behind a historic series of battles between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom in 1879, which ended the Zulu nation’s independence.

This will be a rare opportunity to learn about the Zulu Wars from one of the leading experts in this subject, Rob Caskie. Rob is the senior guide and principal lecturer at the Fugitives Drift Heritage Lodge in the heart of the Zulu War Fields, and is renowned for his balanced and passionate talks.

The Zulu War Talks which are being held across eight venues across the country this summer are the brainchild of Nick Hood, a passionate supporter of Help for Heroes. Nick came up with the idea. After visiting the Zulu battlefields in Kwazulu Natal, and being struck by the valour, courage and honour of the troops fighting far from home.

Nick Hood said: “What better way to honour what hundreds and thousands of soldiers, airmen and sailors have done for us over the years than taking the time to find out more about the heroism of the British soldiers and the Zulu warriors in the battles of 1879. We hope the audience will thoroughly enjoy these talks but also that these events will increase people’s awareness and knowledge of Help for Heroes.”

Nick Hood received support and guidance on how to make this event happen from the business advisory firm, Deloitte. Mark Hill from Deloitte said: “Help for Heroes is one of Deloitte’s main charity partners. So, when Nick first approached me with the idea, I was impressed by his enthusiasm and immediately felt it was something we wanted to be involved with. It’s a fantastic initiative which will appeal to history enthusiasts but also support a very important charity at the same time.”

To book a place at the event, please visit www.h4hzuluwartalks.co.uk or phone 0117 9842817. Doors open to ‘Explore’ in @Bristol at 4pm and the event will begin at 7pm. Drinks and nibbles will then follow the lecture at 8pm. With costs being covered by local sponsors, all ticket sale donations will go to the Help for Heroes charity to support our wounded servicemen and women.

A leading migration specialist has arranged seminars in Bristol for people who are keen to move down under.

The Emigration Group is hosting two half day seminars to give potential migrants all the information they need for moving to Australia and New Zealand as Bristol has featured in the top 20 migration hot spots in the UK.

The seminars will cover the process of applying for residence visas, advice on finding a job and tips for a successful resettlement.
Experts in removals, foreign currency, banking and tax and pension transfers will be at the seminars to speak on their specialists subjects.

Director of The Emigration Group Paul Arthur said: “We have experienced a high level of enquiries from the South West and because of the demand we are inviting people to meet visa and migration experts on a one-to-one basis.

“Australia and New Zealand have remained firm favourites with Brits looking to emigrate. Both countries have sustained little affect from the global recession and they have been very successful at growing their economies. The countries are now booming and there are a huge number of job opportunities with employers actively looking for Brits
to help meet their skills shortage.”

He added: “There is a huge amount of opportunity in a whole variety of industries including health, education, retail and construction.
Australia in particular is booming as the economy and resources are strong and the government is also considering adding 20,000 migrants onto their migrant quota in order to meet the demand of the extra jobs.”

Paul advises that it’s not just financial reasons driving emigration enquiries. He said: “A move down under is a complete life change.
Many of our new clients have been motivated by the nose dive the British economy has taken, however they are also looking for a way to achieve a better work life balance, somewhere where they can enjoy more quality time and better weather!”

The two seminars are being held in the Hilton Bristol Hotel on Saturday May 14. The Australia seminar is at 10am followed by the New Zealand seminar at 2pm.

There are 50 places for each seminar available, to attend you must pre-book your place by calling 0845 230 2526 or visiting www.emigrationgroup.co.uk. Tickets are £15 each or £25 for a couple which includes refreshments.
